About Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke grew up in Denmark to aristocratic parents. However, she is most remembered for her time in Kenya – then British East Africa. Blixen and her husband ran a coffee farm, but she faced constant setbacks due to WWI, the grueling terrain, divorce, and a tragic love affair. Yet the author undertook to support herself, economically and mentally, by writing stories. She recorded this episode in her memoir Out of Africa, which became a resounding success both in English and Danish. Her authorship sustains persistent debate, appreciation, and criticism to this day.

Did you know? Blixen used the pen name Isak Dinesen to publish her writing in English. She actually published Out of Africa in English before publishing in Danish.
