Selma Lagerlöf
Time 1858-1940
Location Mårbacka, Sweden
About Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. As a child she ardently read and sought education in spite of financial insecurity and health problems. Higher education seemed unlikely due to its cost, but Lagerlöf took a loan to fund herself. Her novels, short stories, and plays explore modern life and women’s position in it, often through fantastical stories. The novel Gösta Berling’s Saga remains a best-loved classic of Swedish literature to date.
Did you know? When women were given the vote in 1919, Lagerlöf was invited to give a celebratory speech at the movement’s victory party.
